Christies auction
The
Book Department at Christie's South Kensington, of
which I am head, is offering a very interesting
Lawrence item in its 13th November sale of Fine
Printed Books & Manuscripts (sale 5315, lot 319): a
copy of Anna Sewell's 'Black Beauty' containing an
inscription by Lawrence ('T.E. Shaw') to a member of
the Yarwood family of Northwich in which he
discusses his attitude to animals and to motorbikes.
"Unfortunately I went off on machines," he writes,
"my bike does 96 and goes on for as long as my
strength lasts": poignant in view of the fact that
the inscription is dated '29.iii.34', not much more
than a year before his death. The book carries an
estimate of £1,000-1,500.
